Rod Stewart’s Blended Family: 8 Kids, 5 Women, One Unforgettable Story

Image
In 1963, when Rod Stewart was just 17 and living in London, his first child was born. The now 80-year-old crooner would go on to have another seven children with four different women and get married three times over. Here’s everything we know about Rod Stewart’s big blended family. ROD STEWART’S ELDEST DAUGHTER IS BORN Rod dropped out of school at 15 and was working a string of dead-end jobs, while dreaming of becoming a singer, when his girlfriend Suzannah Boffey told him she was pregnant. “The relationship was pretty much over from that moment,” Boffey, now Suzannah Hourde, told the Daily Mail in 2013. “A baby was the last thing he wanted.” Suzannah went to stay at an unwed mother’s home, where she was forced to spend hours cleaning to pay for her rent and board, and was eventually convinced to give the baby, who she named Sarah, up for adoption when she was one. “It was like a 19th-century institution. We had to work like skivvies to earn our keep. ...

**Title:** **Anxious Parents Demand Stricter Rules on Men in Childcare for Safer Environments**

Horrific allegations of child sexual abuse in childcare centres across Melbourne have put the role of men in early childhood education back in the spotlight. Coming after other major media reports of child mistreatment in care, many parents are feeling very anxious about the safety of their children. Some may be deeply suspicious of men working so closely with children. That caution is totally justified. But there are many innocent, well-intentioned and caring men working in centres across the country. They’re playing a vital role in a sector already plagued by well-documented staff shortages . Driving them out of the workforce would be a mistake for the sector, for parents and for children. Read more: Parents of kids in daycare are terrified following Melbourne abuse allegations. What can they do? Hyper-viligant behaviour Men are still a rarity in childcare centres nationally. The latest workforce data show about 8% of early childhood e...

43 and Child-Free by Choice – No, I Won’t Change My Mind

Image
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has urged Britons to have more children because of the “worrying repercussions” of a plummeting birth rate. What she seems to be forgetting is that not everyone sees having kids as the ultimate goal. I certainly don’t. In an article for The Telegraph, Phillipson stated that too many young couples were hesitant to have children due to the high costs involved. Finances have influenced my decision not to have children. As a freelance writer I was never going to be a high earner – I have never been ambitious nor hungry enough to make a lot of cash – and I vividly remember watching my parents struggle with money throughout my childhood. They didn’t have much outside help, so to keep childcare costs down, my parents worked shifts, with my dad starting work at 6am and finishing at 2pm, coming home in time to wave my mum off to work for the rest of the day. It meant they barely saw each other except for weekends. But it’s not just abou...

UK Parental Leave System Under Major Review

Image
Parental leave in the UK is confusing for both families and businesses, the Business Secretary has said, as a major review into the system is announced. The review will look at maternity, paternity and shared parental leave to investigate how improvements might be made. Currently, most new dads and second partners are able to take up to two weeks of paid leave from work after a baby is born. Most mums and birthing parents, meanwhile, can take up to 52 paid weeks off work – though lower pay kicks in after 39 weeks. Alongside the familiar paternity leave and maternity leave, the UK also has adoption leave, parental leave, parental bereavement leave, shared parental leave and neonatal care leave. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the current situation is ‘confusing, even for businesses’. Sign up to 's politics newsletter, Alright Gov? Goodbye to Bedtime Stories: Why Parents Are Reading Less to Their Kids

Image
Nicola Trotman grew up as an avid bookworm, often reading under the duvet by torchlight. So when her daughter Sadie, who will turn two in August, was born, she made a point of instilling a similar love of books. “After bath time, we read stories to her. It’s a habit we really enjoy and that she really enjoys, so much so that everyone says she’s going to be a bit of a bookworm like me,” says the 34-year-old PR director from Melbourne. “It’s really helped a lot with her language development. You can have almost conversations with her … she knows all her animals, she’s learning colours at the moment. She knows her ABCs already.” Bedtime reading at an all-time low New research from HarperCollins UK , however, has found the number of parents reading aloud to children is at an all-time low. Fewer than half of parents of children under 13 said reading aloud to children was “fun for me”, while fewer than half of 0- to 4-year-olds a...

Michelle Obama’s Hidden Motherhood Wisdom That Could Change Your Life

Image
Behind Michelle Obama's strength and resilience lies an upbringing marked by simplicity and authenticity. A lesson passed down by her mother, Marian Robinson, that continues to inspire the former First Lady… and might just transform your own outlook on parenting. The Art of Showing Your Flaws: The Legacy of Marian Robinson When Michelle Obama talks about her childhood, she's not describing a fairy tale. She's talking about a small apartment on Chicago's South Side, simple meals, frank discussions around the dinner table, and most of all... her mother. Marian Robinson didn't have a parenting book on her nightstand or a degree in child psychology. However, she possessed something rarer: everyday wisdom and a capacity for truth. Being truthful, for her, meant saying "I don't know" when she didn't have an answer. It meant acknowledging that she was tired, that she needed a moment of calm, or that she had made a mistake. This stance...
