Netflix Users Furious as Promising New Series Gets Axed

Image
Netflix subscribers have been left heartbroken over the cancellation of The Residence. The streaming service has made a habit of prematurely cancelling acclaimed shows over the years, with the most controversial cases including The OA , Mindhunter and Kaos , all of which were canned despite securing a cult fanbase . It has now been announced that murder mystery series The Residence , starring Orange is the New Black ’s Uzo Aduba , will not be returning for a second season. The Residence followed eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp (Aduba), who is invited to the White House to solve a murder that was committed during a state dinner. Reviews for the series were positive upon its release in March, with fans and critics expressing hope that Cordelia Cupp would return to solve more mysteries in future seasons in a similar vein to Benoit Blanc, Daniel Craig’s super detective in the Knives Out film series . While the show...

Don't Let Neil Gaiman's Accusations Overshadow The Sandman

Image
‘We do not choose to be created, nor do we choose how we are made.’ In the first season of The Sandman on Netflix , these words are uttered by Lord Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), otherwise known as Dream. In the context of the show, Dream is referring to everyone’s lack of agency in their inception. It’s essentially a slightly pretentious way of saying ‘you can’t help where you come from’. Going into season 2, Morpheus’s words feel especially apt due to the large shadow cast over the show by its co-creator, Neil Gaiman . The 64-year-old fantasy author, who wrote the comics The Sandman is based on, stands accused of sexual misconduct by eight women . Adeel Akhtar: "My US Struggles & Why British Culture Stands Out"

Image
Adeel Akhtar is an excellent advertisement for the character-building quality of uphill struggle. His parents were less than thrilled by his determination to follow a path as unpredictable as acting, and for several fruitless years it seemed like they had a point. He began to ask why he was getting so little work: was it because there were scant opportunities for British Asian actors, or was it his own shortcomings? “The struggle was so fraught,” he says now. He was 30 by the time he finally got noticed as one of the hapless terrorists in Chris Morris’s 2010 satire Four Lions , but since then he’s figured in so many the UK’s must-see shows, from Utopia and Killing Eve to The Night Manager and Black Doves , that he’s like a kitemark of quality. He’s won Baftas for 2016’s Murdered by My Father and 2022’s Sherwood , plus an Emmy for the Netflix fantasy drama Sweet Tooth . Now he’s in rehearsals at the National Theatre for Shaan...

Hit Drama Series Creator Exits Ahead of Third Season

Image
The future of The Last of Us is set to be very different after creator Neil Druckmann announced he will be stepping away from the series. Based on the video game series of the same name, The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie in a post-apocalyptic world. The acclaimed series, which returned for a second season earlier this year , follows groups of survivors 20 years after fungal virus infects large swathes of humanity. While the show has a mixed reception among its biggest fans right now , critics still love the HBO series and the series is cited as an example of how to adapt video games into TV shows. This transition from game to screen was helped by Druckmann, 46, who wrote and directed both The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II before creating the TV show. But whatever a third season looks like for the series, Druckmann won’t be involved after announcing his intention to step away from the hit zombie horror (via The Ank...

BBC Unveils New Season That Left Fans Skeptical

Image
BBC iPlayer has finally released the fourth season of the US remake of hit sitcom Ghosts , an adaptation that sparked fiery debates among fans. The UK version – starring Charlotte Ritchie , Kiell Smith-Bynoe and Mathew Baynton – follows an eclectic group of ghosts living in a manor house who equally infuriate and endear the new owners, Alison (Charlotte) and Mike (Kiell), when the former gains the ability to see the dead. The US version, which airs on CBS, follows a similar premise with Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar playing a couple named Samantha and Jay respectively, who must deal with the riotous ghosts roaming their new home-turned-hotel. Several of the characters are Americanised versions of the UK gang, such as Pete (Richie Moriarty) taking after the ill-fortunate Pat (Jim Howick), and Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) taking inspiration from Robin the caveman (Laurence Rickard). It’s not a total copy, with plenty of original plotlines and characters that ...

Children's TV Legend Returns for Series Reboot

Image
A legend of British children’s TV has confirmed that he’ll be reprising his iconic role from one of the best-loved kids shows of the last 20 years. Andrew Agnew, who played PC Plum in Balamory between 2002 and 2005, will be stepping back into his old costume for the planned reboot, coming in 2026. Balamory, which ran for four seasons and more than 200 episodes, was the Scottish kids’ TV show that defined a generation with its memorable ‘What’s the Story?’ theme tune and picturesque setting. Filmed in the town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull – one of the largest of the Inner Hebrides islands in Scotland – Balamory followed the lives of the small fictional island community who lived in the titular village. In September 2024, it was confirmed that Balamory would be returning with brand new episodes in 2026, with BBC bosses setting the official revival date. Ever since, speculation has been rife as to whether its lead stars Andrew, Julie Wilson Nimmo, and Miles Jupp,...
