Netflix Users Furious as Promising New Series Gets Axed

Image
Netflix subscribers have been left heartbroken over the cancellation of The Residence. The streaming service has made a habit of prematurely cancelling acclaimed shows over the years, with the most controversial cases including The OA , Mindhunter and Kaos , all of which were canned despite securing a cult fanbase . It has now been announced that murder mystery series The Residence , starring Orange is the New Black ’s Uzo Aduba , will not be returning for a second season. The Residence followed eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp (Aduba), who is invited to the White House to solve a murder that was committed during a state dinner. Reviews for the series were positive upon its release in March, with fans and critics expressing hope that Cordelia Cupp would return to solve more mysteries in future seasons in a similar vein to Benoit Blanc, Daniel Craig’s super detective in the Knives Out film series . While the show...

If you’re in search of a solid genre romp, ITV has just added four seasons of a Roswell-set alien mystery series. Based on Melinda Metz’s Roswell High series of novels, the sci-fi drama Roswell, New Mexico is about a bunch of extraterrestrial beings who infiltrate small town America – except, they’re the good guys. With a third and fourth season that have never aired in the UK before, the first season kicks off with the return of Liz Ortecho, a scientist played by Jeanine Mason, who finds not much has changed in her hometown. Amid government cuts in biomedical research, Liz is forced back home to live with her father, after first leaving town in the wake of her younger sister Rosa’s death. HGTV Cancels Two More Shows in Escalating Bloodbath

Image
HGTV went on a cancellations spree last week, axing several of its popular shows - and a network source tells the Daily Mail that more changes are coming. 'We had to stop the bleeding,' said the senior source, who claimed that revenues were underperforming and the network needed to act. 'We were hemorrhaging money. So in order to stop the bleeding, we had to have a bloodbath. It was calculated cuts to make things make sense, financially.' Without warning, HGTV pulled the plug on Farmhouse Fixer, Bargain Block, Married to Real Estate and Izzy Does It. The sudden cancellations sent shockwaves through the HGTV fandom, and left employees of several shows fearing for their jobs. 'Decisions are still being made,' said the insider, who works directly with programming. 'It sucks for everyone involved but that's the TV business. Everyone understands that. Cable networks are struggling now, and we all have to make smart decisions.' Farmhouse ...

BBC Unveils New Season That Left Fans Skeptical

Image
BBC iPlayer has finally released the fourth season of the US remake of hit sitcom Ghosts , an adaptation that sparked fiery debates among fans. The UK version – starring Charlotte Ritchie , Kiell Smith-Bynoe and Mathew Baynton – follows an eclectic group of ghosts living in a manor house who equally infuriate and endear the new owners, Alison (Charlotte) and Mike (Kiell), when the former gains the ability to see the dead. The US version, which airs on CBS, follows a similar premise with Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar playing a couple named Samantha and Jay respectively, who must deal with the riotous ghosts roaming their new home-turned-hotel. Several of the characters are Americanised versions of the UK gang, such as Pete (Richie Moriarty) taking after the ill-fortunate Pat (Jim Howick), and Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) taking inspiration from Robin the caveman (Laurence Rickard). It’s not a total copy, with plenty of original plotlines and characters that ...

**Binge-Worthy Breakdown: What’s New in Season 3 of The Back Side of Television**

Image
At a time when local television seems more ephemeral than ever, there’s still a market for reminding people of the duds and flops of yesteryear. And if Mitch McTaggart’s The Back Side of Television was simply about mocking 70s-era Australian detergent commercials’ unhealthy fascination with lemons, it’d still be a worthwhile addition to the schedule. But McTaggart, best known for his yearly overview of Australian programming The Last Year of Television , is a knowledgeable, likeable, and extremely funny host. His rummage around in the medium’s back closet is thought-provoking viewing guided by the kind of sharp and insightful intelligence we rarely associate with Australian television critics. Previous seasons have served up everything from a look at the generational dumbing-down of television news to an extended takedown of Play School – or at least, the ruthless attitude the show’s producers have taken towards every other attempt to create educational tel...
